BELLEVUE – Yang’s Dumpling House UPDATED

Yang’s Dumpling House UPDATED

I know food porn is probably overused but I have to share one of the most memorable meals I have eaten in a long time…and it happened by accident. I was actually on my way to eat at the famous Won Ton Cafe in Lake Hills area of Bellevue (moving to NE 20th in Bellevue by end of the month!) when I saw this little 5 table spec of a restaurant in the same strip mall. Yang’s Dumpling House. You need to know this name as it is sure to take you out of your “Panda Express/Cathay Inn” experiences and give you some authentic Mandarin food. Yep, Mandarin…not just Chinese. You see, REAL Chinese food is regional and more and more radically ethnic Chinese restaurants are popping up not just for their people who now live in the US, but also for us who have been here and are just now learning about the fiercely ethnic food that massive continent has to offer.

When I went in (mid afternoon), there was no one else in there but Yang. I asked him to tell me about his menu and he mumbled to me something about not being able to speak English very well so I pointed to his menu and tried to ask him what he would recommend to me. Everything was less than $7. We settled in on the Pork Noodle Soup (simply named for us of shall-we-say of Western European descent) and the pork steamed buns. There was only another 8 or so items on the menu…a couple more soup options, a handful of dumplings and a few more buns.

Out came the most beautiful site my eyes have seen since the Cambodian episode of No Reservations. Large chunks of fatty pork, fresh broccoli, succulent broth, and buckwheat yakisoba noodles. I added some Siracha and away I went…pure heaven. It is clear that the poor in most countries eat WAY BETTER than we do here…this simple dish is probably eaten more often in Northern China then we eat cold cereal. It was simply unbelievable.

Knife, Dowl, Flour – what else is there?

The meal was simply perfect. I was already thrilled and was ready to tell everyone I know about it…when he shows me, from across his counter, the 12 inch wooden dowl he said he has carried through 8 states.  You see, this dowl is like a rolling pin and he hand makes EACH of these buns right there. The man is an artist, a craftsman, and somehow a poet all in one. One knife, one pot of flour, and his wooden dowl.

Steamed Buns

Go there. Eat there. I can’t wait to see and here that he has people lined up around the corner to eat lunch or dinner. Yang is my new friend and I hope EVERYONE goes to visit.

Probably my new best friend

How to get there: Lake Hills Shopping Center on corner of 156th and Lake Hills Connector in Bellevue. On corner of strip mall running north (perpendicular) to the Korean Market.

  • Yang’s dumpling house is closed, the place is empty! O NOs! It was my favorite place to eat. It is apparently moving somewhere closer to Redmond on 140th?? Does anyone know where they moved to? Please let me know.

    • Off of NE 20th in Bellevue I think. I am going to find out though! A lot of the businesses in that Lake Hills Shopping Center are moving to the same area. Will let you know!

      • This is getting a bit more scbuejtive, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of neighbors will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune Social is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

I am a new Volvo owner, although we have had several Barrier Volvos in the household over the years and always had a positive impression. I brought my gently used C30 (new to me) to have a protective coating applied to the windshield and headlights. On check-in, I also ordered a full set of protective rubber mats. I called the next a.m. to ask if I could change the color of the mats if it wasn’t too late. My representative, Chris I believe, was extremely accommodating took care of the change. A good beginning, I’d say!

      • Location: Bellevue WADate: September 17, 2012Sales Person: Sue F.SalesService Not Rated We have now purchased our foturh Volvo from Barrier. The experience was FANTASTIC (as it has always been). Sue Frank, our outstanding sales person (from whom we have purchased all of our Volvo vehicles), takes the time to listen exactly what we want, doesn’t pressure us on things we don’t, and follows up to make sure we are completely satisfied. Plus, the service department is top-notch fully explaining the service and always exceeding our expectations on the time it will take to complete. Professional, friendly, easy and customer-focused is how we would sum up our experience. If you want a best-in-class car buying experience, go to Barrier Volvo (and ask for Sue)!

He was very patient and understanding and spent the extra time we needed to find the right car for us. Service writer Eric Bryer recommended Don to us & took the time to walk me through the mechanical aspects of the car. We never thought that we would ever buy a new car before but the competitive pricing and approachable staff made the process very fast. • Location: Bellevue WADate: September 30, 2012Sales Person: Chris K.Sales Not Rated Service Came in for a routine check up at 133,000 miles. Your rrcoeds reminded us that I also needed pads and rotors replaced, with a new battery included. Wish I knew why this one failed. The first lasted for almost 100,000 miles. But now everything is back to ship-shape and hopefully no work for some time. This is still the best riding and driving car I have ever owned.

  • I saw an August 2013 review on Yelp recently and someone else on Yelp posted this address IrishMike posted above: 14400 NE 20th Street, Bellevue.

    • Location: Bellevue WADate: November 1, 2012Sales Person: RovicSalesService Not Rated Rovic has been very genuine, frneidly, and responsive to us. She is in the awkward and difficult position of being new. However, rather than trying to hide this fact, she was completely candid and forthcoming about having any kind of difficulty answering questions and promptly brought in others to help in the process. She has been very genuine and honest, which is why I wanted to deal with Barrier.

  • Yang’s Dumpling House is opening on NE 85th. across from Safway two blocks from where you turn right heading south to go into Costco

  • That is a surprising location. I really hope they do well, but this seems like a bad location to me. Not enough of an Asian population around. I’m not saying that only Asians can go here (I’m not Asian, and I’m sure going), but, honestly, this is not your typical Chinese-American food, and we all know who their primary customers are. It also seems that there are not a lot of businesses around that area, and this is a perfect work lunch spot. I assume the other location didn’t work out, which is too bad, as it would have been almost perfect.

Ironically, I was recently bemoaning the lack of good Chinese food in Kirkland (given the other excellent food there), but this seems not quite the right type of restaurant for Kirkland.

I look forward to be proven wrong, and I hope it’s a huge success.
