Lets talk about downtown Bellevue for a moment shall we? Once home to only a handful of chain restaurants, mostly attached to the mall, is now loaded with several dining options ranging from an Irish Pub to several ethnic Asian restaurants including the famous Din Tai Fung who of all places to open up its first stateside restaurant, believe it or not, chose Bellevue!
One restaurant, however, has been through the ever changing sklyline transformation over the past 15 years in this city a few miles east of Seattle and has stood out has an authentic, mostly-homemade taste of our friends to the South…Mexico.
La Cocina del Puerco has resided a block of Bellevue Way on Main St. in Old Bellevue, a quaint little stretch of the downtown area that was the main run up from the lake years ago when there was a ferry that brought people across Lake Washington from Seattle and back. This 3 block area has all sorts of great shopping and eating destinations which we will discuss some other time…
La Cocina del Puerco was started 20 years where the proprietor brought her families recipes up from her hometown in Mexico and after a couple of stops in other US cities, settled in on Bellevue to serve her handmade tortillas, pork diablo, chile relleno, and other Mexican dishes that were a part of her rich family tradition. Set up like what I would picture in my head in central mexico, complete with metal tables, folding chairs, and lots of bright colors, and a friendly staff.
This restaurant is loaded with business folks wanting to get a quick, delicious meal at lunch, or parents (like me) who want to introduce a more authentic Mexican food experience than the Americanized versions we have all eaten out, even bragged about as the best “Mexican” in my city, etc.
There are other great Mexican restaurants on the eastside of the Emerald City, and we plan to share those with you some time very soon, but we have to tell you that if you want excellent, delicious, and VERY authentic Mexican food near the big mall, swing by La Cocina del Puerco, you will be glad you did.
